European Championship for Wind Orchestras (ECWO)

European Championship for Wind Orchestras (ECWO), 25 and 26 May – BOZAR Brussels

Test piece and own choice pieces & International Symposium

Vlamo, the Flemish Association of Music Bands and Musicians, is happy to announce the European Championship for Wind Orchestras (ECWO). The upcoming Championship of 2018 will take place on the 25th and 26th of May 2018 in BOZAR Brussels, Belgium.

During the European Championship for Wind Orchestras, top Wind Bands from over 9 European countries will compete. In Brussels they will give their best performance but only one can ultimately win the title of European Champion!
This exceptional gathering for enthusiasts of wind music is a unique opportunity to experience, celebrate and acknowledge the many facets of wind music.

Test piece Mutations by Bart Picqueur

Bart Picqueur wrote the piece at the request of Louis Martinus who wanted an original work for a new CD by the Royal Band of the Belgian guides. The inspiration for the work was drawn from two beautiful pieces of wind band music, The Danse Funambulesque by Jules Strens and Dionysiaque by Florent Schmitt. The result is an accessible contemporary work for concert band. It’s a pragmatic work based on a consistent 4-notes motif, which –as the title suggests– evolves trough the piece. The entire piece forms a diptych, a mysterious lento including a flute solo and a virtuoso dance with a certain groove. The clarinet binds the two parts, in a cadenza in which it shows it’s whole musical range.

Own choice pieces & time table – Saturday 26th May
Next to the test piece, all the orchestras perform various own choice pieces.

International Symposium & Opening Ceremony – Friday 25th May
Alongside the championship, Vlamo organizes an International Symposium on 25th May 2018 about ‘The impact of music making on society’.
Based on their own experience, three speakers will offer a unique perspective on this theme: Bill Connor (BASBWE, UK), Harrie Reumkens (WMC Kerkrade) and Lukas Pairon (SIMM, Social impact of music making).
